ICA Miami Family Sundays: Movement and Dance with Local Artist Jenna Balfe

ICA Miami invites families to join a dance and movement workshop led by artist Jenna Balfe this Sunday. Children of all abilities, ages 8 and under, can participate in this free, 1-hour session. The workshop explores contemporary art through movement and interaction. This hands-on approach helps kids connect with the museum’s exhibitions in a fun and meaningful way. It also makes art accessible to even the youngest participants.
Family Sundays will continue on October 20 and 27. A special Family Fest is also planned for November 3, 2024. These family-friendly events encourage children to develop a love for art in a playful environment. Free tickets are available for each session until 11:45 AM on the day of the event. Be sure to reserve your spot early.
This is also the final weekend to view Zilia Sánchez’s exhibition, Topologías / Topologies. This exhibition features a comprehensive survey of Sánchez’s iconic shaped canvas paintings. Created between 1950 and 1996, the works explore formalist ideas while addressing social issues like gender, feminism, and identity. Sánchez’s art is both abstract and personal, making this a must-see before it closes on October 13.

1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair & Ann Marra Arte Contemporanea Gallery Exhibition

Ann Marra Arte Contemporanea, based in Rome, is currently showcasing at the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair in London. The gallery is presenting a selection of works by contemporary African artists. Although the fair ends on October 14, Ann Marra Arte Contemporanea continues to feature exhibitions beyond the event. This allows art enthusiasts to explore a broader range of contemporary works at the gallery.
The gallery is currently hosting a solo exhibition by Iranian photographer Shadi Ghadirian. The exhibition, titled I’ve Grown Roses in My Garden, runs from September 24 to November 9, 2024. Curated by Silvia Cirelli, it explores themes of modernity, tradition, gender, and societal struggles in Iran. Ghadirian’s works often highlight contrasts and paradoxes, focusing on the tension between freedom and censorship. She also addresses the lingering effects of historical conflicts, such as the Iran-Iraq War.
Shadi Ghadirian is internationally recognized for her thought-provoking photography. She has exhibited at renowned museums like the British Museum, the Centre Pompidou, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. This exhibition spans her early works from the 1990s to her latest project Seven Stones (2023), which examines domestic threats symbolized by a looming boulder. Other notable works include Nil, Nil (2008), where war and domestic life intersect, and Like Everyday (2002), where women are depicted with kitchen utensils replacing their faces, commenting on societal contradictions in Iran.

Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM): Caribbean Cultural Institute Fellowship Recipients Announced
Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) has announced the 2024 recipients of its Caribbean Cultural Institute (CCI) Fellowship. This year’s fellows—Arthur Francietta, Claudia Claremi, and Emilie Boone—bring diverse artistic practices from the Caribbean and its diasporas. Their projects, focused on advancing Caribbean art and scholarship, will contribute to Miami’s cultural ecosystem through research and public programs.
Arthur Francietta, a graphic and visual artist from Martinique, will explore the creation of a Caribbean writing system. Claudia Claremi, an artist and filmmaker of Cuban descent, will expand her series La memoria de las frutas (The Memory of Fruits). This project examines the emotional bonds people share with Caribbean fruits. Emilie Boone, an art historian, will delve into Haiti’s photographic history. She will explore how contemporary artists engage with photography to reflect on Haiti’s past and present.
The fellows will also take part in the WOPHA Congress (Women Photographers International Archive) from October 23-26, 2024. This event is a key part of Miami’s cultural calendar. It highlights the role of photography in documenting the experiences of women across the Caribbean and beyond. The congress will offer a platform for critical dialogue and artistic exchange.
